At a media conference held at the Parliamentary premises yesterday ( 6th), R Sambandan TNA MP announced that the TNA decided to support General Fonseka having considered the welfare of all Sri Lankans. “ We had a discussion with the President but he did not respond positively to the issues we raised – in our discussion with General Fonseka, he was able to give us answers that showed us that he was sincere and committed. We have decided to support General Fonseka thinking not only of the welfare of the Tamil speaking people but all Sri Lankans.”

He added. “ The President had no assurances he could give us. But General Fonseka has given us fair and reasonable answers for issues such as resettlement of people, high security zones and the rehabilitation of Tamil prisoners. We have faith in him.”

“ We have a problem with the way in which the President has conducted his affairs all this time. There has been no transparency in his secret agendas. As a result, the cultural heritage of the Tamils and the Moslems in the north and the east was destroyed. Instead of having a dialogue with the MPs, all the President did was to talk to various individuals. We condemn such behaviour.”

Responding to questions from media, Mr Sambandan said that General Fonseka was no longer in uniform but a civilian. “We are impressed with the speech he made at Anuradhapura – he said that if a black man could become the President of the USA, why a Tamil or a Moslem could not become the Leader of our country.   In the history of our nation, no leader has made such an observation.”

“ He may have said various things in the past. But he is no longer in the Army. He has changed and we believe that everyone must be given the opportunity to change. We trust him as the future leader of the country.”
