New NIC to be introduced in 2010

Commissioner of the Registration of Persons Deprtment, A.G. Dharmadasa said that a new National Identity card with enhanced features would be introduced before the end of year 2010.

Noting that tenders will be called within the next six months, Mr. Dharmadasa said that several security aspects including the fingerprints of the ID card holder would be introduced.

 

He added that NIC that is currently in use will be issued to applicants for the timebeing, targeting the forthcoming General Elections.

 

Meanwhile, reports say that temporary identity cards for the forthcoming General Elections will not be issued through the Registration of Persons Department.
